The Captain's Report –
Duke’s Divot
Fellow Nomads,
Our
game at Uitenhage was a very sad occasion
for all of us, having to say a Nomadic
farewell to our most Senior Past Captain and
Founder Member, Peter Fischer, may he rest
in peace. Please note his achievements and
service to this club, which was published in
our April edition of our Newsletter. It is
highly unlikely that his participation will
ever be equalled in the Eastern Cape.
A
big thanks to Uitenhage Golf Club for
hosting us for the first time this year. The
time and effort that goes into that club
with the limited resources is amazing.
Uitenhage Golf Club is about as good as it
gets, and that says a lot for their devoted
green keeper, Maurice Olivier. I had the
pleasure of playing once again with our HLM,
Neale Kunhardt, Danie Hugo and Maurice
Olivier, who stood in for their Captain
Brian Buchanan. The weather was fine with a
light breeze coming up later in the
afternoon, why the points were so low is a
mystery, maybe it was a hangover from the
Nationals, where we fared not so well.
Congratulations to Steve Pritchard who
scored the most points for our club at
Nationals.
Our
field was boosted by Proposed member Thashen
Govender, Solly Hess and Clive Warmberg from
Border Nomads and seven visitors. Many
thanks to Roy Newman and his starters, as
always the ladies and Steve Prichard for
doing the fines. Well done to the winners of
the day and thanks to Glen Blom who did the
photos.
Neale
Kunhardt inducted into our club: Michael
Bezuidenhout,Mitch de Hooghe and Hannes
Vlok. Welcome! Game badges went to: Tim
Mason (200) and Alan Young (100). Ties were
awarded to Ryan Webster ( 5 yr) and Martin
Lea (10 yr). Silver Salver was presented to
Phillip Leyland for his 40 pointer at Walmer
Country Club in April.
Early
leavers and dress code violations remain a
concern in our club and I urge you all to
please make an effort conform the clubs
requirements.
Advertising
space is still available in our newsletter;
please contact either Mike Lourens or myself
if interested in There is a possibility that
our playing fees may have to go up soon in
order to help cover the cost of our
newsletter.

The Vice
Captain's Report –
The Vice's Version
Fellow
Nomads,
Although
it got a little gusty at times, our monthly
game at Uitenhage Golf Club in May was most
enjoyable. We had a reasonable field of 103
players and I had the privilege of playing
with a visitor, Albert Zeelie, past captain
(2001) Jeremy Barton and Bill “Billy the
Bunker” Anderson. Again gentlemen, thank
you for a most enjoyable and entertaining
afternoon.
Well,
fundraising efforts are ramping up as we get
to the middle of the year with our first
event, the Nomads Race Day, taking place on
3 July 2009 at Arlington Race Course. Tables
are going quickly and should you know of a
corporate that would still like to get
involved, please put them in contact with
me. Furthermore, should wish to attend as a
Nomad the cost is very reasonable – you
may even wish to bring your wife,
girlfriend, mistress, life partner, etc. The
proceeds of this drive will supplement the
funds raised at out AMT Golf Day in August,
which will benefit out locally selected
charity.
We are hosting the Volvo Masters Amateur at Port
Elizabeth Golf Club on 23 July 2009. The
entry fee is R350 and includes Green fees,
cap and ball marker with clip, a clinic by
Dale Hayes, meal and prize giving. The field
is limited to 116 and should fill up
relatively quickly. The winner on the day
will be invited to the National Final which
will take place at Zebula Country Club.
(This date of the final has not yet been
decided). The winner of the National Final
shall be invited to the World Final which
will take place in Spain in
October/November. The proceeds of this day
will benefit our local Junior Golf
Foundation.
Finally, on 20 August 2009, PEGC will host our AMT Golf
Day – this is our main fundraising event
and we hope to fill the field, morning and
afternoon. There are many ways that you, as
a Nomad, can get involved in this day.
Sponsor a tee or green, find a sponsor, or
even fill a fourball with guests, will help
achieve our charity goals. Please contact
any of the AMT committee members should you
be in a position to assist – contact
details on our website at: http://www.easterncapenomads.co.za/charityevents.htm
Again,
Nationals in Durban, the Grand Nationals,
was a blast and I am still recovering from
the extended “sprint”. Well done to the
Eastern Cape touring contingent and look
forward next year inching up the scoreboard.
Southern Natal is hosting their 25th
Anniversary weekend from 17 – 19 July
2009. The main game is at Southbroom, with
optional games at Margate CC and Wild Coast.
Please contact me should you wish to
participate. All details are also on the
website “Notice board”.
In
general, we as golfers are playing more and
more golf at estate courses which as
prompted me to include this picture insert
in this report – maybe a friendly
“heads-up” – or maybe it should keep
your “head down” and follow through! I
look forward to seeing you all at the next
game at the St Francis Links on 28 June 2009
and remember that if you bring a guest to a
Nomads game it is your responsibility to
inform him of the dress code, for the game
and for prize giving – remember we, as EC
Nomads, don’t play in Chinos.

Junior Vice Captain’s Report –
Eddie's Eagle
Fellow
Nomads,
Our
monthly game at Uitenhage Golf Course, held
on the 24th of May 2009, was most enjoyable,
and I would like to thank my partner, Bruce
Martin and our opponents, Des White and Alan
Young, for making the game such a closely
contested one!
Although the weather conditions were
not great, we still had a super game!
During
April it was my pleasure to participate in
the Nomads Grand Nationals held at Royal
Durban Golf Course.
The tournament started off with a
bang, but as the week progressed, the golf
became a lot less impressive!
However, the tournament ended off
well and it was an awesome experience for
this first-time participant.
Thank you to all the Eastern Cape
Nomads who participated and for making it
such a pleasant experience.
Arrangements
for our next away tour being the Frontier
Trophy and the Rough Rider Cup to be held on
the 11th & 12th of July 2009 at Fish
River Sun and Port Alfred respectively are
almost finalised and those of you who are
participating would have submitted your
entry forms by now.
We look forward to seeing those of
you who will be there and good luck!
Our
third away tour being the Seaboard Trophy
has been scheduled for the 8 -9 August 2009
at Goose Valley Golf Estate and Plettenberg
Bay Golf Club repectively.
Please get those entry forms in as
soon as possible as this is also a limited
field and we would like to send a full
contingent of Eastern Cape Nomads to ensure
our success in winning the trophy.
I
leave you with the following quote and
can’t wait to see you all at our next game
at the St. Francis Links.
“Golf
can best be defined as an endless series of
tragedies obscured by the occasional
miracle.” ~ Author Unknown
